BEIJING TO IMPORVE ITS SERVICES TO FOREIGNERS
BEIJING, Mar 10, 1999 (Asia Pulse via COMTEX) -- Beijing Vice-Mayor Zhang
Mao said the municipal government will offer better services to foreigners
this year as part of an effort to promote economic growth and social progress
in the city.

Zhang said the city's foreign affairs activities must not only serve reform
and opening-up, but must also be handled in accordance with economic,
trade, tourism, scientific and cultural development.

He said measures to improve the work on foreign affairs this year will
include expanding links with local governments and economic
organizations in foreign countries, particularly multinationals, and introducing
foreign expertise to develop the city's information-based economy.

Beijing's foreign affairs activities will better serve non-public sectors,
and will focus on promoting international cooperation in the fields of
science, education, culture, health and sports.

Zhang stressed that the municipal government will work diligently to settle
all matters related to foreign residents in Beijing, including housing
and education for their children.

People working in the service sector must improve their foreign language
levels, said Zhang, adding that the municipal government will install
road signs in both Chinese and English to offer greater convenience to
foreign tourists.
