I have been using the U-Scan at my local Krogers for the past year or so and would encourage anyone who has access to it to talk to the people at the store about how it works. For example, all six U-Scans were down last Sunday when all I wanted was a New York Times, some fresh bagels, and some orange juice. I asked "Does this happen a lot?" The person in charge rolled her eyes and said, "Sometimes." So, who knows? I wouldn't make any decisions just based on such instances, but I wouldn't ignore them either.
