CLARENT: Clarent continues to strengthen its presence in Europe

Clarent Corporation, the worldwide leader in carrier-grade, phone-to-phone IP telephony solutions, has announced further plans to strengthen its position in Europe through the establishment of additional regional sales offices and a number of strategic appointments. Clarent's initiative to focus on developing local European presence is spearheaded by Chris Wyles, recently appointed Vice President of Clarent for Europe and Managing Director of European, Middle East and African Operations.
"Europe is fast becoming a strong market for IP Telephony," commented Wyles. "Clarent's strategy from the start has been to expand sales successes to additional PTTs, traditional and new carriers, and long distance alliance companies and this can only be achieved by working closely within the different regions in Europe". He added, "We believe approximately 60% of the world's IP telephony traffic is presently passing through Clarent technology, and that we are in the best position to provide the major carriers and service providers with the means to deliver attractive Voice over IP services to consumer and enterprise customers today".
This announcement also comes shortly after the appointment of Paul Schillebeekx, Area Vice President
- Northern Europe and Benelux, to head the Belgium office and Denis Murphy, Area Vice President - United Kingdom, and serves to add significant force to Clarent's European sales and support services.
Clarent's new European Headquarters in St.Albans, 25 miles from central London, will operate as the hub of European sales and marketing activity and a central point of management for all other European offices, including three additional premises in Athens, Madrid and Nurnberg.
Operating from the new South European regional office based in Athens will be Lorenzo Stella, telecommunications consultant and respected IT industry figure. Mr. Stella will co-ordinate sales and marketing activity in Greece and Italy as the new Area Vice President - South Mediterranean Region. Lorenzo Stella joins Clarent from Glenayre Electronics, global provider of voice mail and prepaid telecom services, where he held the positions of Sales Manager Southern Europe and Telecommunications Consultant. Prior to this he was deputy managing director of Stet Hellas, the first mobile operator in Greece (a sister company of Telecom Italia). bringing with him a total of 22 years experience in telecommunications and technology roles.
Dr. Juan Carlos de Vicente Hurtado has been selected as Area Vice President - Western Mediterranean Region, with a primary responsibility to manage operations for Clarent in Spain and Portugal from the newly established Madrid office. Dr. de Vicente Hurtado brings with him over 15 years experience in general management, sales, marketing and business development in the telecommunications and computer technology industries. Before joining Clarent, Dr. de Vicente Hurtado was General Manager for Lucent Technologies Octel Communications S.A., worldwide telecommunications manufacturer and provider of voice mail, prepaid, intelligent networks and enhanced services, having previously held a number of senior management positions at telecom consultancy and IT companies.
Jurgen Salzmann, Clarent's recently appointed Area Vice President of Sales - Central European Region, will head the Nurnberg office in Germany. Mr. Salzmann comes to Clarent Corporation with over 18 years experience in telecommunications product management, sales and business development from various companies, most recently serving as Country Manager for Lucent Octel Communications GmbH., a leading supplier of messaging products and services and with Philips Kommunikations Industry AG prior to that.
To co-ordinate marketing activities for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Clarent has appointed Chris Haslam, Director of Marketing for Clarent Technologies. Chris Haslam's background incorporates 18 years experience in senior marketing, product management and systems support roles within the telecommunications industry. Prior to joining Clarent, Mr. Haslam was responsible for the EMEA field marketing of the Voice over IP and SS7 functionality of 3Com's Carrier Business Unit, having spent fourteen years previously with British Telecommunications PLC.
These latest developments combine with Clarent's expansion of its European support team, through its recently cemented partnership with international network support services provider Equant, to position the Company as undoubtedly the premier provider of IP telephony to European markets.
