Microsoft Allows Dell to Delete Browser Icon, Wash. Post Says

Washington, March 10 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp. has given Dell Computer Corp. the option of deleting its Explorer Internet browser ''icon'' from the desktop of the Windows 98 operating system on personal computers Dell sells to businesses, chief executive Michael Dell told the Washington Post. That option has been denied other PC makers and could pose a risk to Microsoft's defense in the government antitrust trial, the newspaper said, citing legal experts. The government has charged that Microsoft violates antitrust laws by imposing restrictions on PC makers and that they should be allowed to display a rival browser made by Netscape Communications Corp. or no icon at all, the newspaper said.

A Microsoft spokesman said yesterday that the company is willing to listen to any offer to end the five-month-old antitrust trial, while people familiar with the case said government lawyers want the world's largest software company to make the first move. (WP 3/10 E1 www.washingtonpost.com)
