ESST -MSFT ;Venus Project-Chinese internet devices

Chinese computer maker Legend Holdings Ltd said on Wednesday it would cooperate with Microsoft Corp (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) to develop new applications
based on the Windows CE operating system for the Chinese market. Legend chairman Liu Chuanzhi said in a statement the two companies would establish a
laboratory to develop Windows CE applications in China in order to promote usage of the operating system in consumer electronics products.

Liu gave no other details about the laboratory project, which was disclosed as part of Microsoft's announcement here to launch its Venus project to bring low-cost
Internet access to China. Also participating in the project are Acer Inc , ESS Technology Inc (Nasdaq:ESST - news), Taiwan's Integrated Technology Express Inc
and Philips Consumer Electronics .

Using a localized version of Windows CE, the Venus project makes available a new platform for Internet browsing, electronic mail, document creation, games and
other capabilities specifically designed for the Chinese market. biz.yahoo.com

operating system, the Venus project makes available a new platform for educational software, plus a combination of other capabilities such as Internet browsing,
email, document creation, games, multimedia, TV and VCD capabilities specifically designed for Chinese consumers

For the Venus project, ESS will provide the complete set of chips for OEM manufacturers. The chips include ES6886 (CPU), ES6888 (companion), ES2820 (V.90
modem) and ES4108 or ES4208 (SVCD/DVD). ESS will also provide Windows CE system integration for the OEM manufacturers.
