How sweet it was, indeed, and how fitting that Violetta Chamorro, whose family had stood against both the tyranny of Somoza AND of the Sandanistas, should have been the victor! There was, of course, a direct connection between our willingness to hold firm in Central America and Afghanistan, and the collapse of the Soviet regime. The Soviets learned that they were provoking the kind of response they didn't want, one of vigorous resistance rather than mushy defeatism, by their adventurism. And as Reagan turned the tide of European neutralism, and supported the dissidents in the Eastern bloc (particularly Solidarity), they became frightened. SDI was, I truly believe, the coup de grace, ensuring the continuation of Gorbachev in power, and the pursuit of policies of liberalization, until it was too late. I will even grant that Gorbachev was a real "reform Communist", moreso than Khruschev. But Khruschev was deposed when the Politburo felt that liberalization had gone to far, and so I think that Gorby's rapport with Reagan and Thatcher saved his bacon.
