Really? Suppose I bought 100 oz of gold back in 1990. How much earnings would it have generated? Did it pay a dividend? Now compare that to the purchase of 100 shares of Dell in 1990.

Did Dell generate earnings? You bet!
Did it pay a dividend? Yes again.

And being a very gentlemanly pussycat, propriety precludes me from asking the question about the holding period rate of return of the two.

So which was the smarter move?

But since we are forward looking here, which would you rather invest in: a company that generates economic profit or a lump of yellow metal that costs you fees to store it?

Remember, we are talking investment here.
