Colin, in the past whenever I'm selling a partial position with multiple tax lots, I have always used specific identification to identify which lot(s) I'm selling. My broker recently made it more expensive to do specific identification. My question: can I assume that if I don't identify that FIFO will always be used? In other words, can I use specific identification when the high-basis tax lots are the last lots, and default to FIFO when the high-basis tax lots are the first lots?
