Korean Telecom Firms Win Contract To Operate PCS Network In
Australia
Korea Economic Daily

A group of Korean telecom equipment makers and operators has been
selected to be partners for a telecom project with Hutchison Australia,
providing mobile telephone services based on latest personal communication
service (PCS) technology.

Samsung Electronics, main contractor of the telecom project, values the deal
at $210 million.

Under the contract, Samsung Electronics, KT Freetel and Hansol PCS will
jointly help to equip Hutchison Australia with digital code division multiple
access (CDMA) facilities for its own PCS services in Sydney and Melbourne
due to start in 2001.

The three Korean firms will also exclusively participate in the operation and
maintenance of the PCS telephone network for eight years after the launch of
the commercial services.

Samsung Electronics dubbed the telecom project as a wedding of Korean
firms' high-level technological standards for CDMA-based PCS and the
advanced marketing capabilities of a foreign telecom company.

Korea is the first in the world offering CDMA mobile services on a
commercial basis.

Hutchison Australia plans to begin servicing residents in Sydney and
Melbourne with CDMA-based PCS services by April of 2001.
