Foreign PC Sales in China -- Imports Fell and Growth Slows

(Bloomberg March 10)

China's computer imports fell for the first time last year, down 39.2%

Overall, computer growth slowed dramatically in 1998 as sales grew by 13.9% to $17.8 billion. In 1997, growth was 41.3%.

Foreign-branded computers took a smaller share last year, at 39% of market vs. 48% the previous year.

According to IDC's Kitty Fok, PC sales in China should slow again this year to 25% growth. However, a government crackdown on smuggling should "limit the fall in unit prices, resulting in PC sales revenue rising about 22 percent this year."

[where does she get this stuff??]

Eckhard Pfeiffer is visiting Beijing this week to raise his company's profile.

Meanwhile, some CPQ execs have demonstrated a decent level of market acumen, selling a few shares in February at prices in the 40s.
