AWLD News.. March 8, 1999 University California Santa Cruz Opens Virtual Campus in Activeworlds

NEWBURYPORT, Mass., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Activeworlds.com, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board:
AWLD) . UC Santa Cruz builds Virtual Campus using Active Worlds 3D Internet platform. In a Friday
news release, on the UCSC website (http://admissions.ucsc.edu), the University describes its unique
project to recreate a 3D virtual replica of its campus using the Active Worlds technology.

Excerpts from the full article, entitled "Virtual UC Santa Cruz Tour Launched" follow.

"UC Santa Cruz students and professional designers around the world have come together to design an
unprecedented virtual UCSC (V-UCSC) campus. Prospective students and their families are encouraged
to take a 'tour,' 'talk' with a virtual admissions counselor, and find out more about UC Santa Cruz in this
just-launched 3D world."

"Information about the campus will be available through a real-time, interactive environment that
provides visitors the opportunity to enter each of the residential colleges, hear student testimonials,
chat with staff and other students, and tour the UCSC grounds right from their computer."

"We are very excited to be a part of this truly unique application of Active Worlds," said Rick Noll,
President of Activeworlds.com. "This is the first VR Campus where students and professors from
around the globe can build together in real time. This collaborative learning experience has far reaching
implications as it once again validates the power of the 3D Internet."

"When you don't know the limits of a medium, you aren't constrained by them," said Bonnie DeVarco,
director of the V-UCSC project. "Each member of the V-UCSC team pushed the limits of what was
possible as we tried to understand what this immersive medium would allow. A complete and truly
realistic university has never been attempted in a virtual space like this."
