john: I stand corrected on the intraday price of $22+.

I pay MSFT $29 a month for unlimited internet. There are other plans for those who use it less. I also pay the telephone connection charges which are by the minute. I use British Telecom. It is under fierce competition from other telecoms and other cable companies. So it allows a user to list a number of "Friends and Family" numbers - the most frequently called. Recently it has allowed 35% deduction on those calls - it was previously 25%. I include my internet number in that group. It also allows deductions on overseas calls. All of these privileges have to be paid for - you pay them $10 per quarter or more to use each of their special plans. We also pay a monthly fee for rental or line charge. Connection costs are very high - $160 dollars per line.

US West is part of a consortium offering telephones with the cable TV. The country is fully cabled up - it took about 5 years of digging up every street in the land. We also have had digital TV for some time. The UK is "leapfrogging" the US on this one.

As I have posted before, the trend now in Britain is to offer free internet access so I would expect MSFT and AOL and others to reduce their prices. But this still means you pay for the telephone calls. Some of the cable company's offer free weekend local calls and I think free calls in the late evening. BT always offers different tarriffs depending on the time of day. After 6 pm and before 8 a.m. is reduced with a further reduction after midnight.

Broadband is the coming thing - the infrastructure is there - and the market for video games is oen fo the drivers.
