I have two problems with your majority opinion issue. 1) Majority opinion is used to determine a lawful course of action in this country and that is fine but it is not and never has been a measure of right and wrong. Ref. literature of the ages. 2) The polls give a clue as to how people might vote and that is all. Ref. the Barbara Walters special on Lewinski. The "we're sick of this" crowd, watched it.
