Birds apparently have identified my back yard as a safe area.
I just looked out and saw a mourning dove, bluejay, blackbird
and a couple of speckled brown birds leisurely feeding in the
grass that I mowed yesterday (I've had a frost-free winter in
my part of Texas). My indoor cat talks to the birds thru a
window screen. A cat imitating a bird is a bizarre sound,
but it seems to work as I've seen birds remain in close
proximity even though they can see the cat.

Male cardinals (the red ones -- females are brown) are very
territorial and will attack a mirror if they see their own
reflection. I once set up an old mirror in the back yard,
and like clockwork each morning a male cardinal would show
up to do battle with itself.
