MOUNTAIN VIEW, California--Netscape said today that it signed a deal with Net2Phone that will let computer users make telephone calls from their personal computers.

Under the deal with Net2Phone, which is a unit of telecommunications company IDT Corporation, the Netscape Communicator browser software will be bundled with Net2Phone's software. The PC-to-phone service will be featured as an icon that can be clicked on the Netscape browser toolbar.

In addition, the Net2Phone service is scheduled to be prominently featured on Netscape Netcenter, its portal service on the Internet. Net2Phone also plans to use Netscape's e-commerce software to serve as the engine for some future programs.

"We believe the future of telephony is linked to the Internet," said Howie Balter, chief executive officer of Hackensack, New Jersey-based Net2Phone.

Netscape shares were up 2.5, while shares of IDT rose 1.38 to 16.82 on Nasdaq today.
