Your logic is poor -- you want to start counting one from a top to a valley and are unwilling to fathom the possibility that DELL could return to it's valley ...

And the reasoning hinging on splits is so funny ... consider for a moment with me what DELL produces: PC's. COnsider the long term trend in prices and the growth in the need for computing power. DELL has had wonderful returns but consider the time frame -- there is no way that DELL as a company or any other company can hold its value over a time as long as gold has. It's an oranges to oragutans comparison ...

my only point was that if I had to make an investment today and that were my only two choices ...

I never said that the several thousand % long term holders have made is something to sneeze at -- simply this --- wake up!!! the odds are against such further appreciation in the future. Ignore the news and think in terms of just the probabilities. History is littered with the great DELLs. What is the shame in taking a profit -- preserving a gain? If you have several thousand % gain -- so what if you miss the last 10 - 20%?

Don't extrapolate all your recent experiences indefinitely into the future or you are apt to be somewhat disappointed.
