Have to run but can not resist one comment. 5 - I am not going to scream at all, I fully believe that Lotus is eating / will eat Open Text's lunch. It is inevitable that they will get caught in the cross fire between Lotus and Microsoft (not just exchange, but Site Server too).

I also will not scream about the number of licenses and whether they represent document management seats or not. It is irrelavent. I fully expect to see mix environments of Lotus and / X, as well as all Lotus DM / KM environments.

I do not think that Lotus will own the entire world.

I do think that vendors a) in the middle of the battle (currently only OTEX) and b) singular or dogmatic focus on "imaging", will fail much faster than anyone expects.

Fish flapping on the ground, well, that needs to stop darn quickly.

Great discussion!

PS:

First thought, messaging based DM will not be the answer for every solution. Replication is not the answer for everything. Will messaging based DM ultimately be the biggest part of the pie, not sure, not yet convinced or converted.

Secondly, what is KM? ;) Is there only one definition? Is Bell and Howell really a KM player? (!)

Thirdly, there's a terrific market for anything-but-ibm-and-lotus. I think it is big enough to accomodate a few players. It may be supplanted by the anything-but-microsoft market one day, but I doubt it.

Michael,

Interesting comment about File being a takeover candidate. Maybe a coincidence but it was the third time today this topic came up. Who do you think would be likely suitors?

BTW...i am in complete agreement with your overall market assessment. I have stated the same opinion several times on other threads. It was this realization 18 months ago that caused me to leave the DM world for greener pastures.
