Taxman,

I think I just posted it but in other words.

MSFT doesnt have anything in the pipe to address the missing links that AD supposedly will have when it is released. As I mentioned before, Active Directory is based on the same Domain Architecture that is in used on today's NT. MSFT has just wrapped some serious code around the Domains to suppress the limitations. Their datastore is one answer. But it is still based on Domains.

I am guessing that they did this because either it was easier to build or because they didnt want to do what NOVL did 6+ years ago and bite the bullet of breaking completely away from their old architecture (because of the migration and compatibility problems). When NOVL developed NDS they did it by building the whole architecture from scratch and completely based on X.500 guidelines. This meant that they had to make the painful decision of leaving Bindery Services behind (NOVL's equivilent to MSFT's Domains).

NOVL has lived through that pain and they have clear sailing now to design the almost unlimited scaleable DS that NDS v8 will be.

MSFT in the mean time is still struggling to get AD out the door. I would predict that the MSFT developers have become so frustrated on building/fixing their AD that will be immediately released as an outdated and inferior DS that I would bet they are seriously looking at licensing Streetalk from Banyan. This is something I thought MSFT should have done 2 years ago - I thought Gates was smarter than that - but his ego got ahead of his brains on the AD issue.

So Taxman, the only thing I could think MSFT might pull off in the next year is that you might see them either buy-out Banyan and integrate their Streetalk technology (likely not going to happen) or they will simply license the Streetalk code and integrate it with AD.

Streetalk in MSFT's hands would be MSFT's only chance at even having some kind of hope in catching up to NDS's untouchable lead in the DS marketplace.

If MSFT doesnt do this and they just put out AD sometime next year, then MSFT will be doing NOVL one hell of a favour. NOVL will not be paying much attention to Active Directory and getting into any Chartware battles. They are simply waiting for MSFT to finally release their code. NOVL knows that the released Active Directory will be the best marketing tool NOVL can find to promote its own NDS.

Thats my thought on that Taxman.

If there is one thing DownSouth is right about (and thats not too much) its that I love the Directory Services technology. I have said for over 2 years that DS would be the next big industry buzzword. Its about time that the industry figured it out.
