500,000 subscriber capacity by the end of 1999. In making this decision GMGC is gearing to the future not the short term.

The decision was clearly made based upon growth projections. Therefore committements from telcos is clearly not far off.

The telcos must be pleased that GMGC will not compete with them in signing Portico subscribers. In fact that is probably a factor that may have stood in the way of signing up some telcos.

New topic anyone?

Greetings thread:
On this rather inauspicious occasion I hope you don't mind a little digression along the lines of, "What is going on with the development (or lack thereof) of General Magic's Portico service?"

A GMGC problem area that I haven't seen addressed enough on this thread is the actual functionality of the Portico product. Can I see a show of hands of actual users here?

If you are a user have you made any "Feedback" suggestions that have been acted upon by the company?

I've observed the company responding courteously to dozens of suggestions I've made to their feedback site, but I have yet to see any (of my own or anyone else's) suggestions fully acted upon, except for the odd glitch-fix here and there.

When will we see some substantial improvements with the service?

It is perhaps a blessing there aren't thousands of subscribers signing up now because they'd probably become too frustrated to stay long. The Portico service is really just barely ready for prime time; their "Billing" system just came on-line about 2 weeks ago, for example, and their on-line "Usage" meter doesn't appear to be functioning correctly yet.

I should think we are long overdo a major MAJOR service upgrade...

And that, for the record, is really why I'm staying long here (and may even add in the 3's or --God forbid-- 2's), because I am guessing/betting that there ARE major improvements coming (jeez there had better be!) that are possibly being held back to coincide with other strategic announcements, or are just not completed yet.

Thanks for the soapbox. In the meantime, I'm curious,

DOES ANYONE CARE TO ORGANIZE (OR PARTICIPATE IN) A THREAD CENSUS?

Here's one user's experience (and a template) for starters...

ENTRY #..................: 03/1999-000-001

PORTICO USER FOR HOW LONG?:    3 months
ORIGINAL PLAN?    Monthly / 60 minute (w/free activation and 60 free minutes)
CURRENT PLAN?    Annual / 750 minute
USAGE LAST MONTH?    755 minutes
MINUTES WASTED 'CAUSE SYSTEM IS AWKWARD
AND IS NOT YET PROVIDED BY (AND/OR FULLY
INTEGRATED WITH) YOUR PHONE COMPANY?    300-350
LAST SUGGESTION PORTICO ACTED UPON?    "Fix problem with Bell Atlantic Voice Mail"
WAS ACTION COMPLETED AND/OR SATISFACTORY?    "Yes. Finally, after 2+ months, it was solved just tonight by 'Eric,' the technical support manager who tells me the solution is: 'my voice mail message has to be at least 8 seconds long or Portico doesn't know she is talking to a machine."
LAST SUGGESTION PORTICO HAS YET TO IMPLEMENT?    "Please give me a few choices for greetings and let me tell Portico when to put calls through directly!"
ANY NEW SUGGESTIONS?    "Yeah. In "Set-up" on the web, let me enter my desired Caller ID identity to replace the generic "Portico" that my call recipients now observe. If possible let me switch [the Caller ID's] account '888' number to my regular main business number too."

Anyone care to play this game for a bit, instead of the old, "where is the stock price going" game?
