I think GS believes what other old crazy fools believe that it has a reasonable long term stability in its purchasing power -- they say an ounce has always been able to purchase a good suit for a man, etc. If the dollar starts fading quickly with respect to the price of gold below some critical level -- his choice, not mine -- he would deem it a preliminary indication that the "real" purchasing power of the dollar was getting ready to take a substantial hit == inflation ... I think it is that simple ...
