Or to put it another way, national survival is obviously a vital interest of the United States... One of the ways in which Hitler controlled countries like Romania, even without invasion, was through monopsony, which means that there were key products, such as oil, for which Germany was virtually the only customer. Thus, the economy of the country was utterly dependent on the good will of Germany, which had other potential fuel sources. Imagine if Saddam controlled the lions share of the world's proven oil reserves. Of course, if the Caspian reserves prove out, and if we can ensure that the pipeline doesn't run through the Middle East, and/or that there are redundant routes, than the strategic salience of the Arabian Peninsula, Iraq, and Iran might diminish...
