I don't know much about the teachings of major religions, and it is not really a subject that interests me much. I'm under the impression that the core message of most is to treat people decently and not be a jerk, which I think are values most cultures eventually come up with. The core message may be surrounded with quantities of window dressing, like an emphasis on poverty or injunctions to slaughter unbelievers; those I would be inclined to attribute to regional peculiarities. If you are supposed to be writing or doing something else creative or constructive I wouldn't be so fortunate: my experience has been that the more creative or constructive writing is, the less likely it is to earn any money, and that is the primary goal these days. I look in here after finishing a given chunk of work, to clear the palate for the next one.

Christine the reason for similarity in religion is because it has evolved over eons with each paradigm formed from thoughts that seemed to be more understandable than in its previous one. Most of the bible religions were a take-off of prior religions and the bible was created and the original Catholic church was by the Roman rule and was used to change religious views of jews who were raising hell about taxes and slavery. Just look at the new testament for example. Render unto Ceasar, slaves obey your master, etc. The Jews didn't buy it so it was given to the gentiles and forced on them by the sword. Just follow it and you will find Christianity grew only in the Roman empire for hundreds of years. Natures laws learned and followed will create the heaven in this life and not the one after death. Failure to follow them will bring you hell on this time around. Been there - done that. 75 years of experience has proved them both.
