I don't think the assholes were ever the great hunters. They would have been the ones who organized the hunt and sent the brave ones in to do the dirty work, since they, the organizers, were too valuable to risk. They would also, naturally, get first crack at the meat. The instinctual drive is pretty obvious: the assholes rise to the top, and the winner of a rat race is usually a rat. Certainly being attached to the man at the top of the pile has its advantages, but I don't believe for a minute that any sane woman who buys into this equation isn't aware of the downside, and I don't have any sympathy with the whining when the guys turn around and treat them like dirt.
