>is this significant to microsoft's overall business?

What NOVL has done is over killed. How many company really needs that feature ? Only a few. If you look the last qtr report from NOVL, you will find the revenue growth is 13% comparing with the same qtr last year which means the demand for the new product isn't too much. If the feature is really so important and so good as Toy described, NOVL should sell it very well. Don't too trust what Toy had said. He is very bias to MSFT, and he always say IBM and NOVL are wonderful, and MSFT is a bad boy.

I would definitely say it is significant to MSFT's business if they have any intentions of having control in enterprise accounts and ISP and Internet Services and products.

The next wave of the Internet will require a Directory Service. The company with the best DS (both product and market wise) will be able to leverage this to their advantage.

A the January Summit I heard that AT&T wants to use NDS to give every American an Object in a national NDS tree. This would give them the ability to very efficiently manage the switching of calls and other telecommunications services. It will also allow them to do what a Canadian telco is doing now with NDS - Application leasing/renting. By making the applications as installable objects, they can easily lease software to their customers (i.e. game rentals, home productivity software, etc.). With the click of a mouse they can give access to a user in the tree and just as easily take it away.

We are talking the tip of the iceberg here Taxman. Until you have experienced what a true DS can do for you, it is hard to imagine just how powerful a DS can be. NDS has the capabilities right now to do most of this stuff. Why do you think so many people in the industry are hyped about ZENWorks. This directory enabled tool is deadly powerful for organizations. ZENWorks could easily be considered for ISPs.

MSFT knows this is an extremely important technology but they are being very low-key about it because they know they dont have anything yet to go to market with that would not be laughed out of the room by the Internet community. So they don't want to even mention the topic of Directory Services because if they do, they might wake up the industry even faster to the benefits and then they will be playing HUGE catchup on the run-away technology.

But it doesnt make much difference. The industry is now figuring it out. That is why NOVL's stock is flying now. Its not flying because the industry thinks NetWare will return to its market glory. Its because with NDS, NOVL is being considered the next Internet stock that Wall Street must have.

The only thing I can say is, ask me in 1 year the same question about Directory Services and its importance to the industry and even the general consumer. I will bet it will be a no-brainer by next summer. And NOVL will be on the crest of that huge wave.

MSFT will try hard not to miss this huge wave as well, but their AD technology is so grossly behind that it will not have the ability to provide an alternative to NDS. So if NDS does become the defacto standard (which a recent informal industry poll says clearly that NDS will be the defacto in 2 years) then Internet services and products will have to have NDS integration built-in in order to take FULL advantage of NDS. Think about it - MSFT IIS with native NDS capabilities.
