BT,

I disagree about the potential of the Walgreen's deal. As you know, Walgreens is a huge company. If, for example, PPOD can expand this relationship into other territories, that is one gorilla-sized competitor equalized. I would rather see PPOD in a far-reaching alliance with Walgreens than see Walgreens come out competing. The area manager for the S.F. area clearly feels that there are cost benefits to partnering with PPOD compared to going it alone. If it works out, others may feel the same. Also, the benefits of being associated with the Walgreens brand are powerful. These sorts of alliances play an important part in the way forward.

Take note: Walgreens will "assist Peapod in the merchandising and inventory management of the products. Additionally, the parties will cooperate in co-marketing efforts." Could this mean adverts for Peapod instore? Imagine seeing that in Walgreens stores in every market Peapod services (say, throughout Chicagoland)........... Need I say more?

O.K. "Walgreens will also supply Peapod with several new
general merchandise categories, including household hardware and small appliances, electrical supplies, audio and video tapes,
stationary and art supplies, and seasonal items."

Walgreens is not just a 'retailer'.

Cheers,
Bond
