I think the impact of the dope scene had a lot to do with the environment the people who were doing the dope were in. I got into it in college and after dropping out of college, mostly upstate NY days. We'd smoke grass or hash and go paddling, rock climbing, sailing, maybe sit around and play guitars or screw, whatever. Do some coke and swim in a river somewhere, drop acid and lie naked in a meadow gaping at the stars. We did a lot of drugs, but there was a real innocence about it, and nobody got fucked up; I knew more people that were seriously damaged by booze.

In the cities it always seemed to turn ugly, and lots of people got fucked up.
