I too am guilty of having "blundered on" by installing software and not first closing "all" programs now that I think of it. I've only been closing the obvious programs.

Since you did all the work to reformat your hard drive and make a clean installation of Windows, is there a way that you can preserve the pristine like quality of the OS?

I'm thinking maybe having your OS on a partitioned area of your hard disk, say 750 mb to 1 Gb. And have that drive copied exactly. Somewhere I've read about a utility that specializes in this.

Then, I guess you'd treat your OS like your car, like every time you change your oil, restore your original OS settings.
