I don't buy it Johannes. Thirty years ago I was penniless. I couldn't finish my BA and had no resources except the cloths on my back and what I could stuff into a back pack to go do anything else. I spent several years drifting from one seasonal labor job to another. I enjoyed it too. I observed some interesting things about people during this episode of my life. I could stand on the road for hours and reports from other hitch hikers were, for days. I had my thumb out, begging for help. Many many people drove by. Most would be sure to look in another direction as they did. What does that mean? I'm sure for some people they were doing the safe thing and I support them for that. In other cases though, people did not want to take the time to think about my situation. This isn't 70% its more like 99.99% of the people. On one occassion, years later a preacher was telling me about his calling to minister unto the needy. So, I asked him if he had ever considered the plight of someone on the side of the road. No he had not, at least up to that point. I still believe he was sincere about his mission, but there you have it. Now with bill clinton I think we have a similar situation. It isn't that 70% of the people are in favor of this guy. It is that 70% are comfortable with the status quo in their own busy lives. They don't want to take time to give his situation much thought. They definately don't want to disrupt their own routines to do anything about him if they don't have to. So, they are simply looking in another direction so as not to have to deal with it.
