Lucent Frontrunner In Base Station Market

Lucent Technologies Inc. [LU] is well out in front of the pack with its share of the wireless base station market, the industry
analysts at Allied Business Intelligence Inc. (ABI) reported. As of the end of 1998, ABI pegged Lucent's market share at 33
percent, followed by Nortel Networks [NT] and LM Ericsson AB [ERICY] at 20 percent each. The rest of the field consisted of
Motorola Inc. [MOT] at 12 percent, Qualcomm Inc. [QCOM] at 7 percent, and Nokia Corp. [NOK/A] at 4 percent.

"There is little which can impede the growth of wireless," said ABI senior analyst Larry Swasey. Despite the slowdown in many
foreign markets, ABI expects wireless subscribership to maintain a 17 percent CAGR through 2003, with the figure 21 percent for
base station CAGR. ABI expects 2.5 million base stations to be deployed by the end of 2003.

ABI's numbers track with new figures from the U.S. Department of Commerce, which also said to expect subscriber growth to
accelerate over the next 5 years, propelled by gains in worldwide privatization and deregulation, and by technological advances.
Total U.S. spending on wireless communications infrastructure is expected to grow 13 percent compounded annually to $8.18
billion in 2002, according to the new annual forecast from the Telecommunications Industry and MultiMedia Telecommunications
Associations. (Linda Astor, Commerce Department, 202/482-4466; Larry Swasey, ABI, 516/624-3113.)
