So who says they aren't crooks?

If ethics played a role in the stock market, you would see the Bears wearing clerical garb. These guys are not rocket scientists --- at most there are a few ex-mathematicians and economists thrown in --- they are businessmen. They live on rumors.

It's about making MONEY. You remember the famous Abbie Hoffman experiment? You want to reform these guys?!!

"spreading around phoney rumors...highly questionable analysis...suspect statistics..." would be unhealthy emotionally (for everyone) in an ideal world but in a world in which people routinely slaughter each other and even get the CIA to help them by pronouncing a few symbolic phrases in exchange for munitions, a few lies are nothing. Ask Paul Engel about that FAB in Indonesia.

These guys believe in P.T Barnum. Their worst nightmare is getting conned.

Incidentally there has to be a little bit of truth in every argument or it would be harder for the masters of propaganda (read fund managers hyping their approach to the public) to have an effect.

The truth in the Bear argument is that -1- growth will eventually slow down in the US economy (business cycle remember that?) -2- valuations reflect future growth not past earnings (if the economy slows down most tech stocks are overvalued).

So at some point the Bears are "right". Of course it's figuring out when that point is going to occur. I find it difficult to believe we are on the verge of a Bear market (based on the economic fundamentals) with fourth quarter growth of 6.1% and first quarter growth of 3-4%.

My concession to these long term trends is not to be too long, or believe in hold forever. (At least buy puts.)

If any company has proven they can get their act together in the current economic climate it's Intel. They are still making big mistakes with their CPU ID --- they should look to a partnership with NOVL and Digital ME and recapture the high ground there but as Paul says --- they make a profit (even on Celery).
