I agree with your points, but if you track the EBAY situation that occurred...there was a DJ wire story I believe that specifically said that retail investors were waiting for the split because they wanted to buy the stock at lower prices - I think with retail especially, that psychology plays a big role...

I think 3-1 should be done anyway for all of the reasons

The 3-1 split is not to attract retail investors but institutional investors. The problem is that CMGI currently has a very small float, which makes it too volatile to institutions. A 3-1 split would triple the float thus presumably stabilize the stock.
