Had to smile.

Hi Greg,

Reflections on Sony

Although this announcement is regarded as huge news for RMBS, I think it to be underestimated.

1)SONY announced Playstation II 1 year before it will be released in the US. The reason is that it needs sufficient software to be available or its success will be jeopardised. The machine is hyped to be so good, that I doubt that games industry could keep it a secret for so long
2)It uses parallel 64 bit µps. THis puts them about a year ahead of INTEL with their 64 bit device
3)Sony is saving cash to reshape their buisness : Sony is laying off 17000 workers world wide this year, and is investing $1B in the playstation II platform
4) What's exciting is that while INTEL is still trying to get RMBS to work on a 32 bit µp , SONY has done it already on a 64 bit. I assume their RF expertise from other business units was invaluable here
5) Sony neatly avoided MSFT by adopting Linux for their software base. This could indicate something much bigger than a games machine It's my guess that SONY will not stop at the games platform, step II will be fully fledged PC
