[OT: acronym fun] SPD is his party; he's a socialist (thus the "s"; the p is for party, the d is for deutschland). However, it's distinctly possible that he might try a hostile takeover of the CDU..

Don- SPD is effectively translated "Social Democratic Party"..

LaFontaine has been at odds with the Tony Blair social-democrats in his party, because LaFontaine is a 1981-type social democrat...thinks that Germany can still afford to give all unions 6% wage increases, increase pension/unemployment/etc..benefits, and all that has to be done is for those Euro-bankers to lower their rate....It was feared that LaFontaine would dominate the more moderates in his party (being Chairman of the Party for many years) and be, kindof, the shadow Prime Minister...(dominating even Schoeder)..

Bottom line: It is good for the world, and especially Germany that this fossil is gone...his knowledge of simple economics was questionable at best, and he represented the worst of old style Euro-scholrosis (sp?)....German big-business is partying today, no doubt..

This should help the Euro...although Soros coming out against it should hurt...
