I agree, its a dialog about appearances and reality. As I'm sure you've seen many times, companies are often perceived to be more valuable as parts than the whole. Net valuations for "pure internet plays" are obviously enjoying big premiums right now; ZD would like that rich valuation to accrue to them, of course. Wishful thinking? The market will speak its mind, I'm sure.

The reality is that Softbank used ZD as a major cash cow to build its empire. The Observer article I cited earlier sketches out the scenario pretty well. The legacy is the big debt, which ZD has never been profitable enough to power out from under.
