Safeskin CEO Declines to Comment on LIG Takeover Speculation

Bloomberg News
January 27, 1999, 10:03 a.m. PT

New York, Jan. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Richard Jaffe, chairman and
chief executive of Safeskin Corp., declined comment on whether
his company intends to try to acquire London International Group
Plc.

''We don't comment on market rumors,'' Jaffe, 45, said at
the Bloomberg Forum.

London International Group, which dominates the world market
for condoms, said on Jan. 25 that it had received an unsolicited
bid approach from an unnamed company, sending its shares soaring
27 percent that day by 35 pence to 163.5p.

The shares rose 5p to 177.5p today. Shares of San Diego-
based Safeskin, the leading maker of maker of disposable latex
examination gloves, rose 13/16 to 24 7/16 in afternoon trading.

LIG, the maker of Durex condoms and Regent surgical gloves,
didn't disclose details of the approach on Monday, except to call
it ''a preliminary unsolicited proposal regarding a possible
merger.''

The approach to London-based LIG came weeks after its stock
plunged by one-third when it posted a first-half loss and said
full-year profit would fall.

>Tried to learn about LIG but symbol request came up with there
is no such stock.

suma.

LIG isn't the ticker -- it's London International Group plc, a british condom company. it's traded on the naz as LONDY.

fwiw, it's up a meager two bits today.

this impending nebulous "news" is spooking me.
