Patrick,

While I agree that the future will be ATM Switching Technology, I believe that this will be in the WAN over the next few years and not the LAN. With gigabit Ethernet looming in the immediate future in the LAN people are less likely in the short-term to replace a proven technology (Ethernet) with one that hasn't proven it's self (ATM).

My company is embarking on a massive deployment of WAN ATM as we speak but to the desktop we will be keeping our Ethernet with voice and video staying as is for now. As QoS issues get resolved in the future there may be a day that all technologies to the desktop are riding one technology but that day is still a few years ago. That is what is hurting companies like FORE right now. They thought that people would embrace ATM to the desktop by now.

Great Post, Patrick.. ATM seems to be driving projected super earnings growth for at least some of the telecom stocks. Wonder why it is taking a bit longer to show up for LSI's bottom line? Just a thought...
