One reason given for the afternoon tech sell-off is the upcoming MSFT conference call. The call could set the tone for tomorrow morning's price action.

Microsoft plans analyst conference call

SEATTLE, March 11 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. planned a
conference call with financial analysts at 1700 EST/2200 GMT
Thursday to discuss its accounting treatment for Office 2000
coupons, a company spokeswoman said.

Chief financial officer Greg Maffei also will give a brief update on the company's business for the
quarter that ends March 30, said spokeswoman Caroline Boren.

She said the conference call also would be open to the media.

To ensure steady demand, Microsoft has been handing out coupons good for free upgrades to
buyers of its current word-processing and spreadsheet package, Office 97.

The coupons are redeemable when Microsoft releases Office 2000, which is expected to be
available next quarter. Microsoft typically defers part of its revenue from any software including free
upgrade coupons to account for the cost of redeeming the coupons.
