I see. That's probably where the difference is: founder paid-in-capital vs. senior executive compensation packages.

Stock issued at the founding level is pretty straight forward, but evidently not executive compensation packages.

BTW: Stock can be legitimately granted at different prices for different classes of stock (i.e. where the terms are different: liquidation terms, voting rights, etc. because the better terms cost more to own and the less expensive ones have less attractive terms.) Maybe he was issued a preferred stock class D that had really bad terms like, "if you don't turn this company around you aren't going to get anything." :)
