I don't remember how long it took us to get to San Felipe. We drove down in somebody's little compact Chevy, it was no big deal getting there. It's a common destination from Orange County. I liked the Sea of Cortez, it is really worth seeing. And maybe it's warmer than the Pacific, which is pretty damned cold right now. I'd look into it, if you're going down to the Anza Borrego you're well on your way there.

My brother in law Tom and I went on a desert safari out of Barstow College a few years ago. Arranged by a geologist, a botanist, and an historian from the college. We spent about three days wandering all over the Mojave along the Old Gov't Trail, which is the old wagon route into Southern California. We saw all sorts of neat stuff. Cima Dome, Zzyzzyx Springs, Indian petroglyphs, snakes, fault lines, the New York Mountains, the Solar Energy Farm at Daggett, the ruins of an old Army fort made out of mortarless stone. You would have loved it. I don't think they do it anymore.

There's probably a dozen arboretums down here, with the Mediterranean climate and all, but I don't know them. The Huntington Gardens, which you know about. There's one near me at Cal State Fullerton. I guess I could see what I can find... I'll bet Sunset magazine has a complete list.
