I have noticed that large orders take a long time to get filled while small ones--the confirmation is there is seconds (on market orders).
I basically "buy and hold" call options until a day or so before earnings depending upon my gut feeling at that time. Lately, I have been playing with March calls on MSFT--got out today. I like the calls when there is momentum buying of the stock as I suspect could happen tomorrow or next week or 2 weeks from now. I get to avoid the day to day stock movements for the split/earnings run up.

Even if MSFT goes up tomorrow, the momentum buyers may still be on the sidelines waiting to jump aboard at the "right" time OR maybe the closeness of the split could cause this sooner.
