N2: NSM's earnings were covered at length by Kernen on CNBC. He pretty well dismissed the company as a perennial loser. Speaking of CNBC, both on "The Edge" and on "Business Center" Pisani finished his piece from the Floor by saying/accentuating "...the trading desks are concerned about what's happening to Compaq and the uncertainty surrounding the PC market." Leave it to CNBC to push the knife a little deeper.

MaoII: As has been said, the NSM news did not miss the evening news cycle. It was duly fed into the PC-worry machine by CNBC.

It is non-news. NSM tries to deflect attention from its continuing poor performance (poor even during times of strong PC demand) by making vague, non-specific references to vague, non-specific concerns about the PC sector, in general.

Contrast that with statements from MSFT that computer demand is there and that they will not only meet expectations ( with a hint that they will exceed them again) but they will do this even though they are not coutning some $400 million revenues realised this quarter which they will account for in the next quarter.

My only caution about the MSFT statement is that it probably refers to the number of units sold not the ASP of those units or the margins on them. (MSFT doesn't really care about the price or margins, all it is concerned about is the number of units carrying its software).
