I have to wonder if that which needs to develop actually will. The only really new technology for significant point-source power generation to develop in the last 50 years is nuclear, and we all know about that. I'm not convinced that behaviour patterns have changed much either, or that they will.

It would be nice to dream of a world of decentralized power generation, in which point sources and distribution nets are no longer required. But I don't see any but a small minority being willing to accept the lifestyle changes that would go with it. We couldn't have cities, for one thing. Not that I like cities, but some people apparently do.
