Motorola mobile deals
Electronics Times

[ Motorola ] 's UK infrastructure operation has
struck deals with two of the UK's competing
mobile communications groups, Vodafone and
Cellnet, to develop Universal Mobile
Telecommunications System (UMTS) and the GSM-based General Packet
Radio Service (GPRS) technologies, respectively.

Both deals were announced in Cannes, where UMTS and GPRS were at the
forefront of discussions as global mobile groups sought and promoted solutions
to boost revenues with data and Internet-based services.

The Vodafone deal is based around the operator's use of Motorola's static
system simulator for its recently announced third-generation wideband CDMA
network deployment trials. It will also provide subscriber terminals for the
Pathfinder project in Newbury.

The $50m Cellnet deal has been struck by the Motorola Network Solutions
Sector (MNSS) business to introduce GPRS across the Cellnet network, and
includes the implementation of a core wireless data capability.

Adrian Nemcek, general manager of MNSSs' customer solutions group, says
the deals indicate Motorola's commitment to GPRS as the next step to 3G
mobile comms.
