By the way, ian, you seem to be missing an obvious point. In a situation where there may be more than one interpretation, one is free to believe what one will. To put it another way, if your opinion is as good as theirs, well, their opinion is as good as yours. There is nothing left except to try to persuade one another, or go your separate ways...
