AIT to provide passport issuance system AIT Advanced Information Technologies AIV Shares issued 10,901,886 Mar 29 close $1.00 Tue 30 Mar 99 News Release Mr. Bernie Ashe reports AIT Corporation has been selected by the General Directorate on Migration and Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica to provide a more secure and modern passport issuance system. The contract is valued at $300,000 (Canadian). GenIE, AIT's secure document issuance software, will be the basis of the centralized system, which is expected to issue 80,000 to 100,000 passports per year. As part of the deal AIT will also provide the print solution hardware, AIT PV-200 readers for quality assurance purposes, and training and installation services. Over the past decade the Costa Rican passport has been the subject of numerous attempts at alteration and forgery, resulting in problems and delays for Costa Rican citizens travelling abroad with legitimate passports. A key objective for the new passport issuance system is to ensure that the process for issuing a Costa Rican passport is - and is perceived to be - accurate and reliable, and that the security features of the document render it resistant to fraud. By automating and modernizing the system, the Costa Rican government also hopes to accelerate the passport issuance process, without compromising quality control. This deal, with its emphasis on the security of the issuance process, is an important win for the company. The Costa Rican government recognized that by selecting GenIE - an existing application that can be customized - the development time required to get the system up and running would be greatly reduced. This further validates what the company believes to be a key benefit of GenIE. About GenIE GenIE is a software application that integrates digital imaging, workflow and document management for the production of virtually any secure document. The PV-200 reader uses optical character recognition (OCR) technology to read machine-readable travel documents such as passports and visas.
