And just Why should there be any confidence in it?


You can have the same level of confidence in the current financial systems as the one that previously existed before with the gold standard.

You can be confident that human mistakes, corruption, or greed will result in drastic consequences in EITHER systems. There is a wealth of historical reference to substantiate that.

If you doubt, then why have their been bank holidays/runs while under the "disciplining" effects of the gold standard??

People, Richard, mere mortals are the ones who take the steps necessary to maintain confidence in a financial systems, whether it be JP Morgan or Alan Greenspan.

Someday maybe you'll understand that human psychology is the primary drive in achieving confidence in the financial system.
