Ericsson Selects V-ONE's SmartGate VPN as Security Solution for Second Generation Extranet
Worldwide Telecommunications Leader Builds Foundation for Second Generation Extranet on SmartGate
GERMANTOWN, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 12, 1999-- V-ONE® (Nasdaq: VONE - news) Corp., the market leader in client/server Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology, today announced that after a thorough evaluation, Ericsson (NYSE:ERICY - news) has selected V-ONE's SmartGate® VPN as their solution for the authorization, authentication and encryption of Ericsson's extranet infrastructure.
Ericsson is now implementing SmartGate in Asia and the United States, which comprise two of the three hubs in the firm's worldwide network. The SmartGate solution is already installed in Stockholm, Ericsson's third hub.
The ability to exchange information faster and simpler between a company and their customers, resellers and subcontractors is critical to worldwide organizations like Ericsson. To fulfill to this essential service, Ericsson is now constructing a foundation infrastructure for its second generation extranet.
While the first generation extranet was used for solving a single communication requirement, the second generation extranet with SmartGate will become a more scalable and flexible solution.
''The new infrastructure consists of the roads and the traffic lights that are needed to secure the information transportation,'' says Ove Gustafsson with the Web & Internet Resources department at Ericsson Data. ''This will enable us to serve our customers even better and more efficiently all over the world.''
During 1998 Ericsson made a thorough investigation of the security solutions on the market. The focus of the evaluation was on the functionality and ease of installation. They also set up a process where each vendor's potential was examined.
The prioritized functionality was:
1) Authentication, to find out whether a user really is who he or
she claims to be; 2) Authorization, so that a user only can access the functions that he or she is granted; 3) Logging, so that the administrators can trace any problems that may occur; and, 4) Encryption, to protect the information from unauthorized access.
Other requirements were that the solution would not make cumbersome demands on the external partners using the extranet, would permit setting individual privileges and be scalable to large applications of thousands of users.
When the evaluation was done only one product remained - SmartGate VPN from V-ONE.
''SmartGate is the only complete product that meets all our demands on a security solution, without the need of adding supplementary products from several different suppliers,'' said Ove Gustafsson.
''SmartGate is particularly well-suited for large companies like Ericsson, because the larger the organization, the more essential SmartGate's unique properties become -- easy distribution and administration of clients, high security and the product's simplicity of use,'' said David Dawson, Chairman and CEO of V-ONE Corporation.
Since SmartGate client software is a ''virtual smart card'', Ericsson will avoid the expensive and time-consuming distribution of physical smart cards or password generators. Another important factor is that SmartGate delegates the responsibility of granting a user's privileges to the customer, which would have otherwise been too cumbersome for Ericsson to handle centrally.
There are already around ten different services available on the Ericsson extranet. During spring 1999, the solution will be implemented in Asia and then in the US. Altogether these three operational centers are the major hubs in the Ericsson Corporate Network.
''Now we have a secure, scaleable solution where we can take advantage of all opportunities of the Internet,'' Ove Gustafsson concludes.
SmartGate VPN runs on a variety of platforms, including Windows NT from Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT - news), HP-UX from Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HWP - news), Solaris from Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq:SUNW - news) and BSD UNIX.
SmartGate perfectly complements network firewalls, including products from Check Point Software Technologies (Nasdaq:CHKPF - news), Axent Technologies (Nasdaq:AXNT - news), Network Associates (Nasdaq:NETA - news), IBM (NYSE:IBM - news) and Cisco Systems (Nasdaq:CSCO - news).
