I don't think that that is true. The problem is that the United States must act as a balance wheel to contain the expansionist designs of various parties. The idea that the people of the region would have worked everything out themselves ignores the brutality of several of the regimes, and the volatile political mix of the various religious and ethnic factions. The idea that we could afford to stay out ignores the importance of the region to the industrialized world, and the potential for serious economic disruption, and political blackmail, if an enemy should consolidate his hold on the oil reserves. Finally, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction is unignorable.
