We are still supposed to be doing that. We can learn about our God from the Quran, Gods messengers, and by studying nature. The profit Mohammad pbuh, said that education is so important that we go as far as China if need be to persue this goal. 1400 years ago that could be equated to going to Mars (not an impossibility, but something that would require every resourse we can manage and every risk we could imagine). Obviously somewhere along the way Muslims dropped the ball. We are created with animal bodies. So we have the animalistic needs and we have a human soul which comes with an additional nature. We have to take care of our animal body and we have to take care of our soul. In struggling with the seen and unseen forces in the world we need to make the best of our resources without giving up our soul. When it comes to some issues a person can discount all of this in favor of targeting materialistic success as the ultimate goal. In this case you can easily justify eliminating the struggle involved with compassion, charity, or as in this case, parenting.
