RESEARCH ALERT - J.P. Morgan ups Gillette

NEW YORK, March 12 (Reuters) - J.P. Morgan Securities Inc. said Friday analyst Sally Dessloch has upgraded her rating for consumer products giant Gillette Co. to buy from long-term buy as its new MACH3 disposable razor has gained market share.

-- It said in a research note that Dessloch also raised her 12- to 18-month price target to $70 from $65.

-- ''We think that the momentum which has built behind Gillette's new product efforts should continue through the balance of 1999 and well past the year 2000, fueling EPS growth of 17 percent in the second half of 1999 and 17-18 percent thereafter,'' read the note.

-- ''We are upgrading our rating on Gillette to a buy as the MACH3 launch continues full steam ahead, achieving a two-point share gain in the U.S. blade market in February and a three point pick-up in razor share, compared with January data,'' it said.

-- ''We think that Gillette can sustain its premium valuation, especially as concerns regarding international exposure should abate as the year unfolds, and investors are likely to seek out stocks with the potential for international upside.''

-- Gillette's stock was up 1-6/16 at 61-13/16.
